Dried mango slices are a fantastic snack known for their soft, chewy texture and tropical.
However, it’s also extremely simple to prepare your own dehydrated mangoes at home! Whether you have a dehydrator or prefer using your oven, you can soon savor your own homemade dried mango!
Frozen Mangoes: Found in the freezer aisle of most supermarkets, frozen mangoes are a convenient option. Pre-peeled and cubed at peak ripeness, they require minimal preparation. However, frozen mangoes typically come in cubes, which may not replicate the thin slices often preferred in dried mango snacks.
Fresh Mangoes: Fresh mangoes offer the best results for creating pliable, snackable mango slices. While they require peeling and slicing into thin strips, the effort is rewarded with an authentic dried mango texture and flavor.
Mango Fruit Leather: For a variation, frozen mangoes can be pureed and spread on a silicone mat to create fruit leathers. While they won’t have the natural contours of sliced mangoes, they are an easy and tasty alternative.
For Frozen Mangoes:
- Slice large cubes in half to ensure even drying, aiming for ¼-inch thickness.
- Dehydrating can begin directly from frozen, though the process may take longer.
For Fresh Mangoes:
- Ensure mangoes are ripe for the best texture and flavor.
- Peel the skin using a potato peeler.
- Slice into ¼-inch thick strips, working around the pit.
Using a Dehydrator:
- Arrange mango slices or cubes on dehydrator trays, leaving space for air circulation.
- Set the temperature to 135ºF (57ºC) and dry for 6-12 hours until leathery.
- Rotate trays occasionally for even drying.
Using an Oven:
- Place mangoes on a baking sheet lined with a silicone mat.
- Set the oven to its lowest temperature, propping the door open slightly for airflow.
- Flip slices every hour and remove once fully dried.
